Big Book of Earth & Sky Review.....

The Big Book of Earth & Sky is a 15 foot chart showing the inner and outer atmosphere, published by Masterbooks, a division of New Leaf Publishing Group. The book is recommended for children ages 7-12, however, I have six children that range from 18 years of age all the way down to 2 years of age and we are enjoying doing this  study all together.

The chart comes out of the book so you can unfold it to experience all the wonderful information to learn and enjoy!

This book is awesome! Each panel is so colorful and inviting. It has such detailed charts and graphs. We are learning so many things. There are all sorts of facts about oceans, mountains, weather, caves, deep-sea diving, the water cycle, just to name a few.

We highly recommend this book. There is also a Teacher Resource Guide for $5.59 that I recommend using when you are teaching out of this book. It has questions, activities and discussions on what you can do for each study. I downloaded a free preview off of their website that looks like this:

Living Virtuously: A Wife's Complete Guide To Keeping Her Heart & Home and Giveaway

Many years ago my friend shared some wonderful books and DVD's with me and one of the DVD's was of Erin Harrison and her family sharing on homesteading. We have always enjoyed watching them. VeggieTales Super Comics Review

 

I received copies of the VeggieTales Super Comics from Family Christian along with an appreciation certificate for the purpose of this review.

 

 

 

Our family loves VeggieTales. We have been enjoying our dvd's for years along with all of their books.

 

When Family Christian started looking for bloggers to review the new VeggieTales Super Comics I got excited. I am always looking and buying these products to add to our collection of VeggieTales. So you can imagine how I felt when I got this opportunity!

 

 

 

Everyone in our big family, no matter the age, loves VeggieTales. But, I think my 6 year old and 8 year old enjoyed them the most.

 

 

 

The great thing about these comics is that my bugs (my children), I call all of them my bugs, know who the characters already are. We watch them so much that they know everything about each one.

 

 

 

We received both Volume 1 and Volume 2.

 

 

Volume 1 contains three stories; Dave and the Giant Pickle, Lyle the Kindly Viking and Larry Boy and the Prideosaurus.

 

Volume 2 contains three stories also; League of Incredible Vegetables, Larry Boy and the Reckless Ruckus and Josh and the Big Wall.

 

 

These are great little comic books. Very high quality in my opinion. The pages are beautiful.

My Review Of This Book.

 

 



I wasn't sure what to expect from this book. I was really excited about getting this review. I am so glad I did. It's a memoir and such a fun one. Sophie Hudson takes readers on a wonderful journey through the south. This book is full of humor. She shares her life story in the south during the 1970's through the 90's. She shares all her fond memories about her hair, her clothes, her music and movies and all the people and places she grew up in and around.

 

I love this book so much. I think it's because I am a Mississippi girl also and grew up in the same era. It's like I was her best friend growing up. I remember everything she talks about. I also loved how she reflects on how God uses each one of the stops along our paths for a purpose and how it molds and builds us and our lives into who and what we are.

 

The last few chapters in the book were my favorite. She was right on when she talked about home and what it means.

 

Great read. If you are wanting something fun and upbeat, grab this book, you won't be disappointed!

Couponing Made Simple.....Molly Crew Review

Are you one that wants to use coupons but really don't know how? I have the solution, Couponing Made Simple by Christi the Coupon Coach. The Molly Crew had the opportunity to review this product. Her books sells for $18.00 or $4.99 for the ebook.

When the book arrived, I thought I would be overwhelmed by it but when I started reading it, I really enjoyed learning about the process which made it very simple to understand. She has so many ways of using coupons.

How it worked for me:

We live in a small town and the one newspaper that is available to buy has no coupons in it, not even on Sunday! So, I went online and found various websites where I could print coupons. After that, I went around town collecting all of the sales papers. When we put our minds and energy into this, we save anywhere from around $8 - $10 each shopping trip. That's not much compared to Christi but I am hoping to learn more and more each time and one day walk out saving 68%  or more like Christi.

My final thoughts:

If you want to learn how to coupon and don't have the time to figure it all out on your own, you may want to look into purchasing Chrisit's book. She has done all of the work for you! I am looking forward to learning more and more from her. I just scratched the surface!

I really like the best and last deal she says we will ever find. The deal of the universe----- SALVATION IN JESUS CHRIST!!!

Moving Beyond the Page - Tornado and Amazing Weather - Schoolhouse Review

We received a Language Arts Study and a Science Study from Moving Beyond the Page. It is a literature-based curriculum. This curriculum works well for children that are hands-on learners. They sell complete curriculum and also individual units so you can pick and choose what studies you want to do.

We chose the Language Arts Unit Tornado and the Science Unit Amazing Weather. They can be used separately but are designed to be used together. These units are designed for ages 7-9 and include everything you need for a full study.

We received the physical book for Tornado. The set included the book, Tornado, How the Turtle Got It's Shell and the teachers guide.

The teachers guide is a spiral bound book with lesson plans and student worksheets for you children to work through as they read through the story. There are daily activities listed that you will do for that days lesson.

We received the online access for Amazing Weather. This unit includes the teacher guide (online), On The Same Day in March  
book and Weather and Climate - Geography Facts and Experiments book and a boiling point thermometer. For the student worksheets with the study, I would go online and print the pdf pages for each lesson. With the online access, you can print as much or as little of the pages as needed.

The printable online units seem like the more cost-effective way to go if you are wanting to use this curriculum with multiple students.

The physical unit for Tornado is $24.97 and there is also an online unit available.

The online unit for Amazing Weather is $29.91 and there is also a physical unit available.

Our Final Thoughts

We really enjoyed both of these units. They are really exciting. The teacher's guides are well laid out and easy to follow. All of the  bugs participated in these studies as much as they could. The were always excited to hear what would happen next in the Tornado book. I can see us using Moving Beyond the Page more often. I will be using the online version for our family for everything, that way, everyone can enjoy doing the worksheets. I highly recommendced this curriulum, especially for those who want full inclusive science, language arts or social studies.

Members of the Schoolhouse Review Crew were asked to review these two wonderful books, the first two books in a series,  about a little girl growing up Old Order Amish.

We really enjoy reading Amish fiction books. Every two weeks we go to a Mennonite farm to buy raw cow's milk and raw cream. Although the Amish and Mennonite are different in ways, they also have some similarities. We have really enjoyed making friends with this Mennonite family. They are very genuine and plain people.

The first book, Life with Lily, she lives in upstate New York on an Amish farm and has many adventures along the way, including a new baby brother and starting school. There is always an adventure waiting to happen for Lily, plenty to do and people to love.

In the second book, A New Home for Lily, she moves to Pennsylvania, which means having to adjust to a new school, new friends and a new Amish community. She also meets the most annoying boy in the world, Aaron Yoder! Along this journey some things are good like exploring an attic full of adventure!

One of the authors of these books, Mary Ann Kinsinger was raised Old Order Amish. She started a blog, http://www.ajoyfulchaos.blogspot.com/, after she and her husband decided to leave the Amish church. Here she shares her journey from a happy little Amish girl to where she is today.

My oldest bug read these two books for this review and really enjoyed them. She would talk to me each and every night about what she had read that day. When I asked her how much she liked or disliked these books, she said, "Mom, I only have one word to describe them, AMAZING!"

The books are available, paperback or ebook form for only $12.99 each. They are very high quality books.

The ages are 8-12, according to the publisher but in our opinion, these would be great for all ages. These books would make a great family read-aloud. We highly recommend these two books.

pregnancy ups and downs

Well, I am 26 weeks pregnant this week. So far, this pregnncy has been ok. This morning, at 5am I awoke to contractions! Not Braxton Hicks, full blown contractions! You can just imagine how I felt. 26 weeks is to early for this baby girl to make her appearance. So, I remembered something I read in my favorite book. I think I have mentioned this book before, but if not, the title is Be Your Own "Doctor", an informative Guide to Herbal Home Health Care by Rachel Weaver M.H. I have been using this book for about two years now and would highly recommend it to anyone.

There is a chapter entitled "Pregnancy and Motherhood" and it gives all kinds of information and recipes for pregnancy. I truly love this book. So, when I realized I was having contractions, I went straight to my book for encouragement.

It has a section in this chapter that tells us what we need to do if we start experiencing Preterm Labor. She says for those who are at risk of developing or are currently experiencing true, preterm labor, here are some things you can do:

~Take a lukewarm water (not hot) bath loaded with epsom salt. Use two to three cups of salts. Epsom salt is magnesium sulfate which is what they actually use to stop preterm labor in a hospital. Do it every day if you need, to keep strong contractions from coming back. Especially do it at bedtime to relax you so that you can sleep better.

~Drink at least 12-14 8-ounce glasses of water a day. More if you can take it. Dehydration (even mild) is a leading cause of contractions. But when you do, you need to take at least 1/2 teaspoon of salt to keep your minerals in balance so that you do not feel dizzy from flushing them all out with water.

~Eat a nice amount of good protein. Protein foods include milk, eggs, cheese, meat, nuts and peanut butter.

~Stop drinking all tea and coffee, whether caffeinated or not. Tannins in these beverages can be very irritating to the uterus.

~Stop drinking red raspberry leaf tea or eating anything with raspberries at all.

~Avoid all herbs in the mint family, including basil.

~Lie on your left side as much as possible. It improves blood flow and calms contractions.

~5-10 drops of false unicorn tincture every 15 minutes for an hour and then hourly for a few hours if needed (while lying down). A source if provided.

~Start taking at least 1000mg. of vitamin C per day, immediately and throughout your pregnancy and two to three grams of alfalfa per day or two to three cups of alfalfa tea, which will help prevent premature rupture of membranes and prevent bleeding.

Talk to your doctor or midwife to see if you should be on full bed rest.

She also says to drink a large protein drink. She gives a recipe for this in her book.

A Good Protein Shake

1 egg

1 cup milk

1 tablespoon powedered milk (extra protein)

1 tablespoon peanut butter

1 tablespoon instant chocolate powder or carob if you wish

Blend in the blender. Add a bit of ice and blend. This will give you two or more cups of drink. Drink two cups immediatelyu. This will give you a quick bit of protein that your baby needs.

I took an Epsom salts bath early this morning and it stopped my contractions! What a blessing. I also made me the protein shake and to my surprise it wasn't to bad. I cheated a little and added a little sucanat to make it a bit sweeter.

I will continue to use this book throughout my pregnancy and any other time I feel me or my family needs it.

Those are just a few of our favorites, The first day we received this book, I read each and every prayer to my 3 and 5 year old bugs while they were taking a bath. They listened so well to each and every prayer and wanted to read them over and over again.

I highly recommend this book. It has been such a blessing to us and gives the bugs such wonderful little prayers to pray each and every day!

Book Review: With the Children on Sundays

With The Children On Sundays , from Grace & Truth Books is a family worship book, published in 1893, as a series of children's sermons and brought back to print in 1995. It is designed to be a weekly study for family worship or a Sunday School curriculum for children ages 5 to 11.

In this book, there is a ten page "Suggestions to Parents" that offers methods to help and make these lessons a success. It gives you 63 tips to play church and contains 52 little sermons.

How we used WITH THE CHILDREN ON SUNDAYS!

As I said before, this book is designed to be a weekly study for family worship but we have been enjoying ours as a daily bible lesson in our homeschool. Our first subject everyday is Bible, so I decided to try this book as our daily bible and it worked like a charm. We are thoroughly enjoying this book. The bugs never want me to stop with just one story.

In each story, the author tells you an object to use along side your lesson.  For example, the second story entitled The Worm In The Apple tells us to use a large perfect apple and a stunted, wormy one. This story teaches children how things on the inside is not always how it looks on the outside and how there is sin in our hearts and how it can eat its way out through our hearts into our lives like the worm in the apple.  In my opinion, using objects to enhance these lessons are a wonderful idea. The children are really interested in how the object fits into the story.

At the end of each chapter, there are questions that you can ask your children and start a discussion about the lesson. Each lesson is about 5 to 6 pages in length. The book is very vintage looking with wonderful pictures throughout. We are enjoying this book so much. It is full of wonderful, character building lessons.

Apologia: Journeys of Faithfulness Book Review

Journeys of Faithfulness by Sarah Clarkson is a collection of inspirational stories and devotions written for young Christian women. It can be read alone or with other young women, or in my situation, two of my oldest daughters ages 11 & 15. It is written for girls ages 12 & up but my 11 year old is a very smart bug!

This book is broken down into four parts:

Part One: Mary and Martha

Part Two: Mary, Mother of Jesus

Part Three: Esther

Part Four: Ruth

The author provides fictionalized stories of these women and adds in possible actions and feelings. She also includes a devotional at the end of each chapter, a bible study and a journey journal for writing down you thoughts or prayers.

The stories in this book are very interesting and engaging, however, are fictionalized versions of God's Word. For some people, this is not a problem but for me, it is. I want my children to know the truth and God's Word is true! In my opinion, I am not that comfortable with any fiction in our Bible stories. We really enjoyed the Bible study and devotions in this book.

Golden Prairie Press Review

My girls and I have been talking about learning how to sew for a while now. I can sew a little.

We wear aprons around the house all of the time to do our housework and cooking. We have been wanting to make frontier-style clothing, so when Amy Puetz so generously offered her products for review, we got very excited.

We chose to review her Costumes with Character ebook. What a great way to make history come alive. This is exactly what we were looking for. Now remember, we are beginners, so were not able to do as much as we wanted. Here is what we were able to do for this review:

MY THOUGHTS:

This product is awesome! A must have for anyone that wants costumes for history. We are having so much fun learning how to sew these and planning our next big sewing project. Here is another picture of my two oldest bugs (with the littlest bug in the back ground) helping me cut up and process yummy pears. The perfect opportunity for them to wear their new prairie aprons. In the near future, I am planning to  sew my to youngest bugs their own aprons so that they can help their mommy and oldest siblings in the fun things we do in the kitchen!

There is also a Back to School sale going on. Now is the time to get your patterns if you are wanting to make some awesome costumes.

trying to eat healthier around here!!!!!!!

A while back I purchased a book entitled "Nourishing Traditions".

 I have been a little lazy in trying to keep us eating healthy. I have tried some of the recipes and they were good although I have to admit, I have not used it like I originally planned. I am planning a menu plan to post tomorrow. On my 7 day menu plan, I will be using the Nourishing Traditions book for everything we eat starting Sunday. We are also going to start a little exercise regimen along with our new way of eating. I am hoping to learn alot from this book and how I can improve my families health. Everything from making and using bone broth to eating and enjoying fermented foods. Wish me luck!

We decided to change it up a little this year with our curriculum. I have always used curriculum that seemed to be alot like traditional school material. Pages and pages and pages of work, nothing really that exciting, not much to look forward to day after day. I started researching a little about the Charlotte Mason approach to homeschooling and realized very quickly that this was the way I wanted to school my bugs. In a couple of words, Living Books! Wow, what a difference this has made in our homeschool. We no longer dread getting started in the mornings with this curriculum. It has really been a blessing!

I first saw it at a homeschool convention in Memphis, TN last year. I was a little scared at first but after praying about it and realizing that we had to make a change, it became clear that this is just what we were looking for.  QUEENHOMESCHOOL! Publisher of books for the Charlotte Mason Style Educator.

So far, my three oldest bugs started the Language Lessons. These books are written by Sandi Queen.

These books each have practice in picture study, narration, copywork, dictation, poetry appreciation & instruction, creative writing, grammer instruction, and more, depending on the level.

We are also using the "Learning to Spell Through Copywork".

This series picks up where your phonics program leaves off. Each volume reviews one phonics rule per week, which is very helpful when there are ones that need a refresher course! They are to copy over and narrate words that follow that week's rule throughout the rest of that week. These books are written by Haley and Sandi Queen.

I have my two oldest bugs doing Words of the Week.

This is a vocabulary program based on a picture study. Each volume is an 18 week program for grades 4 and up. It uses full-color picture study and introduces five new words each week.

One area of our school we struggled with daily was MATH!!!!! Now, after starting this wonderful new way of homeschooling, we have also found a wonderful way to do math.

My second grader just started Math Lessons for a Living Education.

 We are enjoying it so much. Each lesson is very fun and adventurous! By far, one of my favorites.

My two oldest started Life of Fred. I had heard of LOF before but never really thought about it to much. I have a couple of friends that use it in their homeschool and seemed to have had success with it.

My oldest bug started the Life of Fred: Fractions. She needed a little refresher course!

My second to oldest bug started with the first elementary Life of Fred book entitled "Apples".

We are also using the Printing with Pictures handwriting program and the Pictures in Cursive series. These were also written by the Queen family.

We are still using another bible study series, history and science curriculum but in the near future, plan on using the complete Queen Homeschool Curriculum.
