TOS Review: Almanzo Wilder: Life Before Laura
As a child, I grew up reading Little House on the Prairie books and watching the TV shows. I loved it! I remember waiting for the show to come on TV everyday.
When I heard about an upcoming review about Almanzo and Laura from Legacy Documentaries, you can imagine how I felt. My bugs have all become fans of these books and shows, so when we had the opportunity to review one of two DVDs , we were ecstatic!!! We chose Almanzo Wilder: Life Before Laura.
Dean Butler is actually the executive producer, the actor who played Almanzo Wilder on the TV show. It tells the story of Farm Boy, one of the books in the Laura Ingalls Wilder series.
This documentary takes you back in time to Almanzo's childhood about his life in New York.
Almanzo Wilder was born in 1857 when America was in the Great Depression. He was raised to be a hard worker and was taught to do everything himself, not to depend or rely on anyone else. I really like how it focused on hard work and discipline. It also showed how much respect he had for his parents. These are traits that I think every parent wants to instill in their child/children. My husband and I work very hard everyday to instill these traits into our children.
This documentary touched on so many different topics. From how food was prepared back then, from whole foods not processed like today to Morgan horses.
We thoroughly enjoyed this documentary. We, as a family, watch many episodes of Little House on the Prairie that we have purchased on DVD. We also have the entire Laura Ingalls Wilder book series and in the near future, plan to do a Unit Study on the series. This DVD will just add more information and enjoyment to our DVD library and school studies.
Almanzo Wilder: Life Before Laura DVD sells for $21.95. It is 53 minutes long and is appropriate for all ages.

Veggie Tales: The Little House That Stood Giveaway!
We love Veggie Tales around here. When I found out we would be reviewing this new movie, I immediately told the bugs. Boy were they excited!
The Little House That Stood: A Parable of the Wise & Foolish Builders. A Lesson in Making Good Choices.
This movie is about when the three little pigs roll into Cabbageville looking to build some new houses. They meet one builder with a plan and two more that didn't have a clue. One is Larry who builds his out of hay and Mr. Lunt with bricks, these two didn't have a clue. But Bob, he builds his houses on a firm foundation, following the wise plans from the Master Builders' Handbook.
Do the little piggies make the right choices when it comes to building their houses - and their lives - on solid ground? Find out in this parable that shows kids when they follow God's blue prints then can stand when the storms come.
We enjoyed downloading a couple of coloring sheets from here and making an afternoon of coloring and watching this great movie.

I highly recommend this DVD. We love veggie tales and love how they use bible stories to teach our kids some great lessons about God. I love how these DVD's give scripture to read to your children.
Here is one of the many they recommend you reading with your children:
Luke 6: 47-48 (Taken from the KJV)
Whosoever cometh to me, and heareth my sayings, and doeth them, I will shew you to whom he is like.
He is like a man which built an house, and digged deep, and laid the foundation on a rock: and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it: for it was founded upon a rock.

Growing Up Wild (Schoolhouse Review)
Growing Up Wild is a DVD collection featuring the adventures of the Wild brothers: Morgan, Hudson, Kian and Asher, along with Mike and Libby (Mom and Dad). These DVDs take you into the lives of this missionary family living in the jungles of Papua, Indonesia.
They share their life and lots of experiences in the jungle through these DVDs. They share about the Wano culture, which are the tribal people they live around. They are there to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ with these people.
For this review, we had the opportunity to review two of their DVDs.
In Volume 1, we see how they live and gather their supplies that are needed on a daily basis. It was also fun to see how this family has fully adapted to the culture over there. From the foods they eat down to how they made their indoor plumbing using water brought into their home through a hose that runs from a spring at the top of a mountain. It is fascinating.
In this DVD, Volume 2, we get to see the tribe that the Wild family lives among. They share their different traditions and tribal beliefs. The Wild children also participate in a tribal piercing! The jungle they live in is such a beautiful place.
We love this series. Each volume features three 15-minute episodes with an activity guide for each. The activity guide includes suggested field trips, science projects, bible scripture and activities.
We as a family thought these DVDs were amazing. It gives you an inside look at how they live each day, doing missionary work, in Indonesia. Awesome! I would highly recommend this DVD series to anyone who wants to see what its like living in the jungles of Indonesia. If you would like your children to get a glimpse into another culture, these DVDs are for you.
Each Growing Up Wild DVD sells for $18.99 or you can save 15% when you purchase the whole set for $80.99. These DVDs are intended to be used with children ages 5-12, but anyone will enjoy them!
